Three persons were injured in a traffic accident that tied up traffic along Ga. Highway 314 north of Fayetteville for hours last week.

Maj. Wayne Hannah, traffic enforcement division director for the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, said that Alexandria Jennee Weems, 17, of Riverdale, was driving southbound on Hwy. 314 when she apparently made an illegal left turn to attempt to enter Pavillion Parkway.

Weems' 1990 Mazda was struck by a northbound vehicle, a 1978 Oldsmobile driven by Jussara Ave-Lallemant, 18, of College Park, Hannah said. Both drivers and a passenger in the Oldsmobile, 13-year-old Lindsay Ave-Lallemant, sister of the driver, were taken to area hospitals, he added.

Nicole Boliver at Southern Regional Hospital confirmed that Weems and Lindsay Ave-Lallemant were treated at that hospital and released the day the accident occurred, Sept. 8.

Jussara Ave-Lallemant was airlifted to Georgia Baptist Hospital, where she was admitted with a serious leg injury requiring surgery, said her father, the Rev. Peter Ave-Lallemant, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in East Point. Jussara was released Sept. 13 and is recovering at home, he said.

Pastor Ave-Lallemant said Jussara was pinned in the car for more than an hour. Hannah estimated that traffic did not resume its normal pace until several hours after the accident, because of the extrication procedures and the clearance time required for the Phoenix Air Care helicopter to land on the highway and take off with a patient.

Hannah said Weems was cited for failure to yield when turning left, but no charges were made against the other driver. Police and fire units from both the county and city of Fayetteville assisted at the scene.
