Panthers and Patriots prevail over opponents

The Starr's Mill Lady Panther softball team improved to 5-1 in the area and 9-4 overall by defeating the Woodward Academy War Eagles on Tuesday by a score of 4-2. Freshman Kelsey McBride got the win, pitching all seven innings and scattering seven hits.

Starr's Mill was aggressive early, scoring two runs off of a triple by junior shortstop Jamie Vining. Third baseman Sarah Scott went 3 for 4 with an RBI and turned a double play from third base in the third inning.

The Lady Panthers had nine hits in their win but stranded six runners. They had a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh, when Kelsey McBride gave up three consecutive hits. The Lady War Eagles took advantage and began to play hit and run ball, forcing the Lady Panthers to make some poor throws.

Woodward narrowed the score to 4-2 but McBride settled down and got the next three batters out.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots destroyed a young and inexperienced Banneker team, 12 -0 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Lindsay Faircloth had two RBI as the Lady Patriuots only left two runners on base all game. Sophomore pitcher Tika Hayes pitched three innings, striking out five batters and walking only one. Sandy Creek battles East Coweta at home , 4 p.m. on Saturday.
