Bocci tourney a warm up for Special Olympics
By MICHAEL BOYLAN
Staff Writer
On Saturday, Sept. 12 the Special Olympics will be hosting
a statewide Bocci tournament at McCurry park in
Fayetteville. The tournament starts at 9:30 a.m. and will run until
approximately 3:30 p.m. Fayette County has both a male and a female
team entering the competition. They are part of the Master's
division, which includes people ages 22 and above. Last year, the
female team won the state championship in Bocci and is looking to
repeat this year.
The Bocci tournament is a warm-up to the Fall
Special Olympics, which will be held in Valdosta, October 18-20.
Other sports that will be included in the competition are track and
field, aquatics, bowling, basketball, both individual skills and
team skills. The Fayette County squad prepares for the aquatics
competition at the Kedron Aquatic Center, Fridays from 5-7:00
p.m., until October.
They are also training for the winter olympics and are
always seeking adult and youth volunteers to mentor and teach the
athletes in any of the sports, including sports that they are not
currently involved with, such as gymnastics, soccer and
floor hockey. If you are interested in becoming a mentor and
donating time or would just like to make a monetary donation, contact
Sue Taylor at 770-631-2542 during the day or 770-251-0973 in
the evenings.
