Local man up to Challenge
By MICHAEL BOYLAN
On Thursday, Sept. 3, The Center for Rehabilitation Medicine
of Emory Hospital is sponsoring their fourth annual Golf
Challenge and second annual Tennis Challenge. The golf
tournament will be played at The Orchard in Clarkesville, GA while the
tennis challenge will be played at The Standard Club in Duluth,
GA. The "challenge" in the Emory Challenge is not just for
players with disabilities but also for participants who think that
those players could not measure up to unimpaired athletes.
The Emory Challenge pairs up players who are physically
challenged with players who are only challenged by the game of
golf itself. The tournament is a fund-raising event to benefit the
Center for Rehabilitation Medicine and proceeds from this
year's tournament are going towards buying a van.
Fayetteville resident Carl Davis is playing in the tournament
this year. He is a manager at Delta who lost his leg in a car
accident several years ago and now has a prosthetic leg.
"I don't hit the ball as far as I used to," Davis says. "But I
do hit the ball straighter than I used to. I used to have a wicked slice."
He has played many of the courses in Fayette County
including Whitewater, Braelinn and Flat Creek but has never played
with any other physically challenged players. " Most of my friends
are just mentally challenged." he countered.
The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m.
and will run until approximately 4:00 p.m. The day will culminate
with a million dollar shoot-out, which Davis is hoping to win.
