Pastor Lyle seeks to disciple, build up members in faith

"I believe the church must reach out to all peoples, regardless of economic status, race or background," stated Pastor Steven Lyle, North Fayette United Methodist Church. "My wish is for this church to disciple and build every person up in their Christian faith."

The church dates back to 1983 and enjoys a membership of 856 persons.The sanctuary was built in 1986 and they added an educational building last fall.

There are a number of activities that take place during the month: the Prime Timers meet the first Tuesday of each month for breakfast at IHOP and each third Tuesday they meet there for lunch. Special trips are held every other month.

The Men's Fellowship is each first Monday with a dinner and a program at 6:30 p.m and various women's circles meet throughout the month.

Chancel choir is Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and hand bell choirs for all ages is held on Sunday evenings.

A preschool is held Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; a parents day out is Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also on Sunday evening, the Methodist Youth Fellowship for 3 year olds to fifth graders is from 5 p.m. -6:30 p.m. and MYF for sixth through 12th graders is from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

Pastor Lyle was born in Atlanta but reared in North Augusta, S.C. He first graduated from Georgia Southern University with a bachelor of science in psychology. While there, he worked for Campus Crusade for Christ and began to feel a call into the ministry. He attended the University of the South in Florida and then The Candler School of Theology at Emory University, graduating in 1981 with a Masters in Divinity.

He has pastored churches in Carrollton, assisted in starting a new church in Cartersville and also served in Ellijay. He came to North Fayette United Methodist in 1994.

While serving as a youth director in Lithonia, he met and married his wife, Gail. She is a licensed family therapist, with a practice in Fayetteville. They are parents of Barrett, age 11 and Catherine, age eight.

The church is located at 847 New Hope Road and can be reached at 770-461-2409. Worship services are Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. On Wednesday evenings a prayer and praise worship service is at 7 p.m.
