Historical Society hosts autograph tea
The Fayette County Historical Society announces an Autograph Tea for Karen Holliday Tanner
on Aug. 16. It will be held at the historical
society building at 190 Lee St., Fayetteville, from 3-5 p.m.
She is the great-granddaughter of John Stiles Holliday, who built the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife
home at the square in Fayetteville and has just written
a book, "Doc Holliday: A Family Affair."
It is a well-documented book on the Holliday family as it pertains to Fayette County,
Spalding County and Valdosta, Ga., as well as Doc's
travels out West. She will be autographing the book
that afternoon.
Tanner was reared in the Chicago area and educated at Northwestern University. She has
lived many places in the Midwest and the South
before settling down in the hills north of San Diego.
Her husband, John, is a history professor. Formerly
an accountant, she now devotes her full time to researching and writing.
"Though a cousin of the dentist," said
historical society president, Tony Parrott, "she has
presented the material in a forthright and thoroughly
documented manner, explaining his heritage, family influences, education and upbringing, all of
which shaped his character and actions. We feel
very privileged that she is allowing us to host this
event. Everyone is cordially invited to come by and see
for themselves."
"We are also having a display of all our
materials on the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House regarding
many of those families that have lived in the
house," Parrott added. "Mrs. Tanner is graciously loaning
us her locket containing a picture of John Henry Holliday and his cousin, Robert Alexander
Holliday, taken in 1852. (It can be found on page 20 in
her book.) We hope you can join us for this
important part of Fayette County history."
