What do you think of this story? Bad Links? | Local high schools to perform this weekend
Two Fayette County high schools are set to bring laughter and music to the community this weekend. The Fayette County High School Fine Arts Department in association with Music Theatre International will be presenting the full length musical, "HONK!" on October 15, 16, and 17 at the Ferrol Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. Curtain times are set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Monday and 3:00 p.m. for the Sunday matinee. "HONK!" is a musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale, "The Ugly Duckling." The cast includes Chase Leonard as Ugly, Tess Menchinger as his mother, Ida and Andrew Puckett as the cat. Other students portraying a variety of roles include Andrew Chance, Kenneth Grant, Meredith Martin, Megan Tiffany, Laura Wiswall, Megan Clark, Lindsay Grant, Nina Wright, Monique Coleman and Sarin Rossi. The performances will feature the musical direction of Casey Huggins and the choreography of Annette Tomasi, and the play is being directed by FCHS drama teacher, Fred Bobbitt. Tickets are available from cast members, at the office of the school and at the door for $8, but you can receive a $1 discount with the donation of a nonperishable food item to aid the Fayette Samaritans food bank. The Starrs Mill High School drama departments presentation of Dearly Departed started yesterday and will continue tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the schools Willie Duke Auditorium. In this uproarious show, the audience will get to know the beleaguered Turpin family, who prove that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father's funeral, the Turpin's other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion, leading firstborn Ray-Bud to tell his long-suffering wife, "When I die, don't tell nobody. Just bury me in the backyard and tell everybody I left you." Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need. Dearly Departed, directed by SMHS drama teacher David Spearman, features the talented members of the Advanced II Drama class, who are hand-selected through an audition process each spring. Class members are Kimberly Crawley, Jackie Currin, Kevin Davis, Devin Hipp, Kevin Hood, Bridget Knapik, Morganne Lee, Jenna McPherson, Brittany Mistach, Adam Sweat, Josh Thomas, Kyle Wilckins, and Michael Wiley. Audiences will appreciate the addition to the stage that the Starrs Mill drama parents, headed by Jim Davis and Craig Thomas, built for the show. The new addition brings the performers seven feet closer to the audience, and will lend a feeling of intimacy to the action onstage. Tickets are available for $5 at the door. If youre in the mood for laughter, music or both be sure to check out these hilarious shows performed by local students. | |
