Bad Links? | Several teams advance in first day of region tournaments By MICHAEL BOYLAN The region tournaments have begun and, for most of the local teams, the first day was a success. Starrs Mill picked up two wins in the region 4-AAAAA tournament at McCurry Park and earned a spot in the AAAAA state tournament next week, while McIntosh and Whitewater each picked up wins in the region 4-AAAA tournament at Redwine Park in Tyrone on Monday. Starrs Mill opened the region tournament with a 1-0 win over Fayette County. The two teams battled through five innings without a score but the Lady Panthers got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Amanda Howett singled, scoring Katie Ison. Paige Peurifoy pitched a complete game for Starrs Mill and only allowed one hit. The win put Starrs Mill in a 7 p.m. game against East Coweta, which the Lady Panthers won 3-1. Starrs Mill went down 1-0 in the first but Howett hit an RBI single with the bases loaded in the third and Ison hit a two out double that drove in two more runs. Howet got the win, allowing seven hits and striking out six batters. In the region 4-AAAA tournament, McIntoshs Lady Chiefs defeated Alexander 3-2, which put them in a game against Northgate last night at 7 p.m. McIntosh trailed Alexander 1-0 until the fifth inning when Kelsey Dwson drove in Holly Houghton. Alexander took a 2-1 lead in the seventh but the Lady Chiefs tied the game as Amelia Beach hit a single to score Lisaira Daniels and won the game when the Alexander catcher tried to get a double play and overthrew the first baseman. Northgate defeated Woodward Academy 5-0 to advance. Whitewater faced Sandy Creek and ran out to a 9-0 lead in the fifth inning before winning 11-4. Megan Glaze drove in two runs in the third inning and Tess Echols drove in three runs in the fourth inning in the win, while Ashley Pedersen picked up the win on the mound. Whitewater will play Chapel Hill, which defeated Villa Rica 9-0 yesterday. Sandy Creek faced Villa Rica yesterday after the paper went to press.
