Local LDS members head for Gulf Coast a third timeThe Jonesboro Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) is continuing its efforts in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. As part of the worldwide LDS Churchs on-going disaster relief efforts, approximately 100 Jonesboro Stake volunteers (men ages 16 and over) will be returning to the affected area on the weekend of Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 for more general clean-up efforts. This is the the third such trip by local LDS members in the past month. The volunteers expect to leave Friday, Oct. 14 and return the evening of Sunday, Oct. 16. Although the specific assignment is unknown at the present time, the upcoming trip follows the Jonesboro Stake sending approximately 250 volunteers to Meridian, Miss., on the weekend of Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, and another 50 volunteers to Slidell, La. (the churchs command post for Katrina relief efforts) on the weekend of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Given the amount of work to be done in Mississippi and Louisiana, the LDS Church plans to continue sending volunteers, aid and supplies (cleaning, hygiene and school) to the area for the foreseeable future. The Jonesboro Stake of the LDS Church includes some 4,100 members in congregations in Coweta, South Fulton, Fayette, Clayton, Henry, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties. |
