Mayo compositions to be featured at local concert

Fayette Presbyterian Church will host a community concert, “Hymns: Ancient and Modern,” Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m, featuring the Christian Minstrels from Atlanta Christian College and compositions by local composer and music educator, Becki Slagle Mayo.

Mayo, a composer who maintains a private studio in Fayetteville, also has served on the music faculty of Atlanta Christian College.

As a composer and arranger, Mayo has published over 60 compositions with 12 major publishing companies. In addition, she has published a book of her own hymn arrangements. The concert will highlight a variety of her piano and choral works.

The Christian Minstrels is a 12-member select vocal ensemble, directed by Dr. Byron Cartwright, from Atlanta Christian College in East Point. The group, which specializes in performing various styles of a cappella music, has represented the college throughout the southeastern United States. Recent appearances include Good Day Atlanta (WAGA-TV), the Governor’s Prayer Caucus, and singing the national anthem for Atlanta Falcons and Braves games.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Student ticket prices are $5. All proceeds will benefit the church’s Sychar water ministry, bringing fresh water to the people of Leon, Nicaragua.
