"The work that parent groups do is absolutely vital to the success of our schools. Unfortunately, that hard work all too often goes unnoticed and unrecognized," said Tim Sullivan, founder and president of PTO Today. "The Parent Group of the Year award is our way of acknowledging and celebrating the important work all parent groups do for their schools and their communities." The JC Booth parent group was chosen for the professionalism and commitment its leaders demonstrated to families during an especially difficult time at the school. Specifically, the PTO worked in partnership with the administration to addresss and respond to a series of incidents including two episodes of inappropriate sexual behavior between students, a death threat made by a student, and an alleged assault on the principal by a parent. PTO leaders responded aggressively to raise awareness and create an attitude change in the school community. Among other measures, they implemented forums for parents and the principal to openly discuss the issues of sex and violence at the school, and hired a professional speaker to talk with students about actions and consequences. "The JC Booth Middle School PTO demonstrated that parent groups can really make an impact when trouble arises at school," said Craig Bystrynski, PTO Today editor in chief. "They played akey role in minimizing the negative impact of the incidents on the school community. Beyond that, they are a vibrant and active group that makes a lasting difference for the students and the school."
