Bad Links? | Real-life Rosie to speak Sat. to DAR chapterThis month, the General Daniel Newnan DAR chapter celebrates its their 19th birthday honoring women in American history. The next meeting of the General Daniel Newnan DAR chapter will be Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at Peachtree United Methodist Church. This month's featured speaker will be Elizabeth Minton, founding member and past vice president of the American Rosie the Riveter Association. She will be speaking on "Rosie the Riveter" of World War II fame. Minton is a "Rosie" herself and will be honored at the meeting as an Outstanding Woman in American History. During the war, Minton worked in two plants at a dehydrating plant in Idaho and as a riveter at Doak Aircraft in Torrance, Calif. Her job was bucking the rivets on the inside of the Douglas A-26. Both plants were awarded the Army-Navy Award for Excellence in Production and all the employees were given Army-Navy "E" pins. She and her husband, Raymond, were married in 1944 and enjoyed 28 days of marriage before he was shipped to the Pacific. While Raymond served at Iwo Jima, she moved with her parents to California where she bucked rivets at Doak Aircraft. When the end of the war came, the Mintons moved to Atlanta and then to Pine Mountain Valley where they raised four children. Also, at this month's meeting Phyllis Findley, the Founder of Community Welcome House in Newnan, will be honored with the Community Service Award. This month the A Birthday luncheon will follow the meeting. The General Daniel Newnan Chapter serves Meriwether, Coweta and Fayeete counties. The NSDAR welcomes any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
