Bad Links? | Desperately seeking ...Fayette County Humane Society needs volunteersBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Thirteen years ago Kathy Taylor was looking for a hobby. Her son was getting older and Taylor had some more free time to invest in something she felt passionate about. She had her epiphany after seeing an ad in a local paper. The ad stated that the Fayette County Humane Society was seeking volunteers and Taylor felt as if her prayers were answered. Since then, she has served the group in many different capacities and now she is hoping that others see this story and volunteer their time to the group as well. The Fayette County Humane Society was incorporated in 1973. It is a nonprofit organization that is a completely separate entity from the Fayette County Animal Shelter. The group rescues animals, mainly dogs and cats, and provides foster homes for them until they are adopted. There are currently many volunteer opportunities in the group and they range from helping at one of the Saturday adoptions outside the Fayetteville PetsMart once a month or transporting the animals to their vet appointments to manning the telephones or becoming a foster home. A person who elects to become a foster home for the animals would either be responsible for housing one adult animal or a litter of puppies or kittens at a time. They would be responsible for the care of the pet but the Fayette County Humane Society would provide all of the necessities for the animals care, including food. Taylor estimates that most of the animals are adopted within a few weeks and that the major commitment that a foster family gives is time. The group needs people to get involved. The Fayette County Humane Societys annual fundraiser, Bark in the Park, had to be cancelled this year due to a lack of volunteer involvement. The event was the largest fundraiser for the group, which relies solely on donations and financial contributions. It is an important fundraiser as the group provides spay and neuter assistance to anyone who asks for it. To raise money this year, the Fayette County Humane Society will be at Doggie Day Care in Fayetteville Saturday, Oct. 15, for their Halloween event, which will feature a pet costume contest and games for dogs. The event is open to the public and the group will be selling raffle tickets for two round trip tickets on Air Tran to anywhere the airline flies in the continental United States.
