Bad Links? | Fayette County begins region tournament play on MondayBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The Fayette County Lady Tigers varsity softball team hasnt had what many would consider a storybook year this year, but the season isnt over just yet either. A win on Monday over their rivals, the Starrs Mill Lady Panthers, could put them in the hunt for a trip to the state tournament and add an exciting chapter to the 2005 season. The Lady Tigers have had more lowlights than highlights this season but the highlights have been particularly good. The team opened the season with a win over Woodward Academy and added a 4-0 shutout win over McIntosh on Sept. 14. Though their region schedule has been tough, including several close losses to teams like Newnan and the top ranked Union Grove team, Fayette County was able to hand Lovejoy a smackdown of a loss, showing that the team could hit for power and generate a lot of runs in a short period of time. The team has received a shot in the arm from Chasity Welch, who has hit .340, while driving in 10 runs. Rachel Barnes and Tori Owen have driven in seven and six RBIs respectively and April Ward has added four RBIs of her own. Welch has 17 hits this season, while April Ward has 16, Ebony Baitey and Barnes each have 15 and Tori Owen has 14 hits. Sharing the pitching duties for the Lady Tigers are Caroline Teubl and Britt Hammel-Cobb. Teubl went 4-5 with an ERA of 3.08 and 43 strikeouts, while Hammel-Cobb went 2-9 with an ERA of 3.30 and 35 strikeouts. Each has had their shining moments in the season with Hammel-Cobbs coming at home against the Lady Chiefs. Fayette County opens the region tournament at 5 p.m. on Monday against Starrs Mill. The game will be played at McCurry Park. Fayette County faced Starrs Mill on Sept. 27 and lost 6-0 but they know what they are capable of if they play a near perfect game. |
