Bad Links? | Big wins for Starrs Mill and McIntosh on the diamond By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starrs Mill varsity softball team had a big week last week, defeating Woodstock 2-1 and then playing in and winning the North Cobb tournament. Last Thursday, Amanda Howett took the mound for the lady Panthers and pitched a complete game, getting three strikeouts and limiting Woodstock to the one run. Lynsey Tedford drove in Katie Ison in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the 1-1 tie and give Starrs Mill the win. All three of those players, along with several others would figure big in games over the weekend as well. Starrs Mill opened the North Cobb tournament with wins over Marietta (7-0) and Hiram (1-0) on Friday night. Paige Peurifoy picked up the win over Marietta while Howett got the win over Hiram. In the Hiram game, Glidden singled, Cate Rosa bunted her over and Glidden scored on an error. On Saturday, Starrs Mill defeated Lassiter 11-1 with Peurifoy not giving up an earned run. The Lady Panthers followed that win with a 4-1 loss to Kennesaw Mountain but Starrs Mill advanced to the finals anyway and defeated Dalton 1-0. Peurifoy got the win and Howett drove in Ison after a double for the lone run. Tedford, who played at shortstop over the weekend, was named MVP of the tournament, while Howett, who batted .400 in the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team. Peurifoy went 3-0 in the tournament and dd not give up an earned run and Coach Mark Williamson also gave credit to Ison who also played very well in the tournament and a number of other recent games. Starrs Mill made up their game with Fayette County last night after the paper went to press and wil play in the Brookwood tournament this weekend. On Wednesday night, McIntosh defeated Sandy Creek in extra innings. The two teams remained scoreless going into the eight inning. McIntoshs Morgan Kidd battled an injury and went the distance, striking out 12 batters. In the top of the eighth, with the international tiebreaker in effect, Sandy Creeks Erin Braswell drove in two runs with a single. In the bottom of the inning, Kelsey Dawson bunted and Sandy Creek was slow in getting the ball to first base. Dawson stole second during Amelia Beachs at bat. Beach was the Lady Chiefs first out that inning but Jocelyn Clarke came up big with a single that scored two runs. Erin Milani reached on a fielders choice and Katie Talisse reached first on a passed ball. Lisaira Daniels drove in Milani after an error was made at first base after her bunt. The win made McIntoshs region record 8-1 with one game remaining on their schedule, a home game next Tuesday against Chapel Hill. Coach Kristy Lewis heaped praise on her pitcher after the game and the defense that backed her up solidly. Weve been working on being consistent on defense, said Lewis. Consistent teams are the ones who win games. McIntosh, Chapel Hill and Northgate all have one loss in region 4-AAAA, while Whitewater, which fell to Alexander 1-0, is 7-2 in the region with their final game coming against Woodward Academy on the road next Thursday. Sandy Creek is 3-5 in the region with their final game of the season coming next Tuesday when they host Villa Rica. They will also have to make up a game against Haralson County. |
