Bad Links? | Tyrone residents oppose library in parkBy JOHN THOMPSON Disgruntled Tyrone residents took their efforts to save Shamrock Park to the Fayette County Commission this week. In a press release, Don Rehwaldt, who is the secretary of the Tyrone Neighborhood Alliance, said he presented the county with a petition featuring 426 signatures of residents who dont want Tyrones new library built in the park. The petition asks the County Commission to take whatever steps are necessary to restore the park to the high standards of other parks in the county. The Alliance emphasizes that they are not opposed to building a new library. Their main bone of contention is placing it in the park. For the last two months, Tyrone town officials have been under fire for unveiling a plan that shows the library, along with other town offices, in Shamrock Park. Town Councilman Mike Smola maintains the town has more than enough ballparks to absorb the loss of Shamrock Park. Town Manager Barry Amos said the redevelopment of the park could lead to a new birth of the towns downtown area and cause further quality growth in the Senoia Road corridor. Fayette County officials heard from Smola last month about releasing the deed restrictions attached to the park, but have not made a decision on the issue. |
