Bad Links? | Food bank responds to added needAs thousands of evacuees are arriving in the Atlanta area, the Atlanta Community Food Bank is taking action. The Food Bank, as a member of Americas Second Harvest, the Nations Food Bank Network, has joined The American Red Cross, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency, The United Way and a whole host of other organizations to support disaster relief efforts. The Food Bank is providing food and supplies to support the immediate and long-term needs of families and individuals who have evacuated to Atlanta from areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina. As displaced victims seek temporary or permanent residence in the Atlanta region, the Atlanta Community Food Bank will be in disaster-response mode for months to come. The Food Bank will need the support of the Atlanta region in support of its ongoing efforts. We are here for the long haul, and we will continue to respond to the needs of those displaced by Hurricane Katrina as well as the people in our community we normally serve every day, said Bill Bolling, executive director and founder of the Food Bank. The Food Banks distribution department created special high-nutrition pallets to accelerate aid to Metro Atlanta and surrounding area shelters, nonprofits and assistance programs. The pallets, weighing 1,300 pounds each, contain items such as food, water and supplies (See table, items subject to change). · Canned okra, tomatoes and corn. If you are an individual or family that wants to help: · Make an online donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank specifically designated for Hurricane Katrina relief; visit www.ACFB.org. · Make a walk-in cash donation. Donations can be dropped off directly at The Atlanta Community Food Bank, 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., NW, Atlanta, GA 30318 weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m.-noon and 1 to 4 p.m. · Make a walk-in donation of food, toiletries or water. If you are a company, school or organization that wants to help by raising money or holding a food drive, call the Food Banks response hotline at 404-419-1738. If you are an agency or other group in need of food or supplies for evacuees, call the Food Banks Community Services Department at 404-892-FEED ext. 1211, 1212, 1213 or 1214. Created in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank annually distributes more than 18 million pounds of food to more than 750 community-based hunger-relief organizations in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank leads seven distinct community-building projects: Atlantas Table, Community Garden Initiative, Hunger 101, Hunger Walk/Run, Kids in Need, Product Rescue Center and The Atlanta Collaborative Kitchen (TACK).
