Bad Links? | Bus video shows seconds before students crashBy JOHN MUNFORD The video from a school bus camera shows what happened seconds before a McIntosh High School student lost control of his car, striking a tree Tuesday after school, police said Thursday morning. The video will help the departments three-person team that is providing a detailed study of the accident scene to determine what happened, said Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray. The driver, Eric Stenger, 16, of 705 Henna Place, Peachtree City, was still in critical condition Thursday at Atlanta Medical Center, officials said. The passenger in his car, Aaron Fischer, 16, of 1006 Patina Point, Peachtree City, was treated for injuries and released from the hospital, police said. Stengers VW Jetta struck the well-established tree on the drivers side door, police said. Murray noted that is one of the most vulnerable areas of most motor vehicles because of the lack of protection offered for side impacts. Multiple witnesses are still being interviewed, but no arrests have been made Murray said early Thursday afternoon. We are looking at some other people, Murray said, but he declined to confirm whether other vehicles may have been involved in the incident. There is no rush to complete the investigation, as the main concern is for Stengers recovery, Murray said. We are concerned for his health and well-being, Murray said. The department is following up on information received in the case and the accident reconstruction team will be taking the car apart to determine if any of the cars systems failed such as the tires or the front end, Murray noted. Accidents of this serious nature are such that precautions must be taken during investigation, he added. |
