Bad Links? | Maughan wins Outlaw division title at Bandolero Nationals By MICHAEL BOYLAN Trey Maughan, a rising sophomore at the University of Tennessee, postponed moving back up to school by a few days so that he could race in the 8th annual Bandolero Nationals on Sunday at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tenn. It was the fourth time that the Starrs Mill graduate had competed in the Bandolero Nationals race and it was the first time that he won the national title in the Outlaw division. The season revolved around this race for me, said Maughan. My main goal was to win this race. Maughan didnt just win the race, he dominated the entire weekend in Nashville. He won a race on Saturday, won the heat race, got the pole position for the final race and led every lap, staying ahead of a competitive field of 15 other cars. Along with the title and the bragging rights for the year, Maughan also received a custom made guitar to serve as a trophy. I guess I have to learn how to play guitar now, Maughan said about his award. The win at the Bandolero Nationals feels even better to Maughan after finishing second in a shortened season in Atlanta Motor Speedways Thursday Thunder. A tornado hit the track earlier this summer, cancelling two weeks of racing and forcing the remainder of the races to be done with no crowd and during daylight hours. While Maughan was happy that his friend Daniel Moore won the Outlaw title, he wished the season went a little differently for him. Maughan is now back at school and is already looking forward to racing in as the defending champion in next years Bandolero Nationals race. He also plans to return to Atlanta for another summer of Thursday Thunder. Maybe hell have learned a tune or two on his new guitar by then as well. |
