Bad Links? | Avoid I-285 this weekend, DOT recommendsMotorists are being strongly urged to avoid I-285 at all costs this weekend due to heavy delays expected at the sites of multiple construction projects. Work for the fifth runway at Hartsfield International Airport that will span I-285 means more delays on I-285 westbound between Clark Howell Highway and Riverdale Road. Extreme congestion is anticipated on I-285 eastbound and westbound in Fulton and DeKalb from Glenwood Road to Northlake Parkway, from Ashford Dunwoody Road to Ga. Highway 400 and from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Buford Highway. Also, I-285 delays are expected for northbound lanes in Fulton and Cobb counties from Langford Parkway to South Cobb Drive. Those counties will also have some delays for work on I-20 eastbound from the Chattahoochee River to the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive overpass. And, of course, two lanes will be closed in both directions on I-85 south between Ga. Highways 74 and 138, with extreme congestion also predicted. We genuinely are pleading with persons planning to attend the Braves games or other activities this weekend to find ways to stay off the Perimeter, said Vicki Gavalas of the Georgia Department of Transportation. If they will just take the few moments it requires to log onto www.georgia-navigator.com, theyll be able to determine alternate routes and travel times. Non-hazardous through trucks, which are usually prohibited from using the downtown connector, will be encouraged to travel that way this weekend, officials said. The reason so many projects are underway at the same time is the numerous weekends of inclement weather, Gavalas said. It will remain this way for several more weekends, Im afraid, but the resulting congestion can be avoided with pre-planning. The DOTs 24-hour construction hotline is 1-800-419-4368. Persons with Verizon or Cingular cell phones can dial *DOT to speak with a DOT operator. |
