Bad Links? | The Doc is in for the Bobcats By MICHAEL BOYLAN Doctors typically prefer to cure pain, not inflict it but the Doc at Our Lady of Mercy has always been drawn to the physical aspect of football and his favorite thing to do is hit. Doc Lee, who rarely goes by his birth name, Flyd Smith Lee III, was introduced to football in the eighth grade. Regarded by coaches as big for his age, he was asked to come try out for the team and the love affair with the sport began. Since that introduction, Lee has played center, nose guard, guard, tackle, defensive end and outside linebacker. Currently he serves as a fullback and a middle linebacker for the Bobcats and he is also one of the team leaders. Before practice begins, he stays on his team as they go through calisthenics, his voice echoing across the playing field and his energy level among the highest among his teammates. Being a team leader means being the first one on of the field and the last one off, said Lee. It means picking the boys up when they are tired and hurt but it also means being a leader in the school, walking tall and representing the team and the school well. Lee has big plans for both his team and his future. His goal for the Bobcats is to go 5-5 this year, which would be a large improvement over the 1-10 record of last year. He knows the team faces a tough schedule but he believes in his team. His other goals is for the Bobcats to finish no lower than third in the region. As for next year, Lee would like to study mechanical engineering. He has heard from several schools who may be interested in offering him a scholarship but he is holding his cards close to the vest at the current time. Ultimately, he just hopes to be playing football next year where he can continue to slam into his opponents. That is a prescription that any coach would like to have on his side. |
