Bad Links? | Rockaway Rd. in SPLOST plansConstruction planned for coming fiscal yearBy JOHN MUNFORD Relief may ultimately be on the way for Senoia residents who commute to and through Peachtree City on Rockaway Road. Funds to design a new road path have been put in the citys Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project list for this year. The cost estimate is $60,000 for the design alone, and construction would take place in the coming fiscal year at an estimated tab of $536,180. Currently the road connects Senoia with Ga. Highway 74 at an unsignalized intersection. As traffic continues to grow on the highway, the traffic backlog on Rockaway will only increase. The solution is to realign the road with the traffic light on Hwy. 74 at Holly Grove Road. Peachtree City Manager Bernie McMullen noted the project might not have been possible without the SPLOST funds. In his mind, this is one of the citys top transportation priorities, he said. In the coming future, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to widen Hwy. 74 to four lanes between Ga. Highway 54 and Ga. Highway 85. Other SPLOST projects planned for this year include the construction of a cart path bridge over Ga. Highway 54 West near the entrance to the Wynnmeade subdivision. The project totals $618,200, but $480,000 of that will come from grant funds, meaning only $138,200 is needed in SPLOST funds. The citys street resurfacing program, estimated at $637,097, is also on the SPLOST project list, along with $127,900 to upgrade the citys cart path system.
