Bad Links? | Lane shift starts Tues. for Hwy. 54By JOHN MUNFORD Motorists using Ga. Highway 54 West in Peachtree City should get prepared for another traffic change due to the road widening project. Starting Tuesday, all traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes from the entrance to the Wal-Mart/Home Depot shopping center all the way to the Fayette-Coweta county line, DOT officials said Thursday. The shift will allow the eastbound lanes to be torn out and replaced, according to DOT Communications Officer Dorothy Daniel. The shift also allows the contractor to begin removing the bridge over Line Creek; traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed bridge. Construction at the railroad bridge is nearing completion with three deck pours left that should be wrapped up by Tuesday depending on weather conditions, Daniel said. The entire project is about 45 percent complete, Daniel said. She urges motorists to drive with caution in the area as changes often occur during the project and much work is going on. Shifts and slowdowns can happen at any time, she said. The new bridge over the railroad will also feature a separate area for golf carts, which will connect the new commercial area on the west side of the bridge to the existing Marketplace shopping center. A cloverleaf path with tunnels under the bridge is also planned to provide access to the southern portion of Hwy. 54 West including The Avenue shopping center. The Peachtree City Council will spend $296,000 for the project with the remaining $200,000 coming from a federal grant. Council approved the bridge contract with the DOT at its meeting last week. |
