Bad Links? | GMC offers free tuition for 05 gradsGMC Community College, with campuses in Union City and at Fort McPherson, is accepting students for the eight-week fall terms starting Aug. 1 and Oct. 14. All 2005 high school graduates receive free first quarter tuition. "I encourage all interested students to contact the college and put their applications in right away," Assistant Academic Dean Jim Dixon said. "This gives us time to show them the opportunities we offer at GMC community college. We also want to be sure students' previous school records and test scores are in proper order and find out if they require additional testing. "The first quarter free tuition for 2005 high school grads is just one of the financial incentives we provide for students and prospective students." Dixon said. "Pell Grants, Georgia Tuition Equalization Grants, Hope Scholarships, Veterans Administration benefits packages and many other options are available to help pay for an education at this college." "In addition, we provide daytime, evening and weekend classes with personal attention and free tutoring," he said. "We want to eliminate the traditional excuses for not getting a college degree." Requirements for application are a high school diploma or GED. Prospective students pay a $35 non-refundable application fee. Application forms may be obtained in person at the Union City campus, 6280 Bryant St., Union City, GA 30291 (770-306-6401) and at the Fort McPherson campus at 1316 Troop Row, Bldg. 60, Fort McPherson, GA 30330 (404-464-3155), or by going to www.gmc.cc.ga.us. GMC Community College is a Distant Learning Center of 126 year-old Georgia Military College located in Milledgeville. (Administrators emphasize that there is no military obligation of any kind for students attending GMC Community College.) It is part of a network of Georgia campuses that includes locations in Columbus, Augusta, Valdosta, and Warner Robins, plus extension programs in Madison and Sandersville, as well as the Union City and Fort McPherson campuses. "Our college motto is, 'Start Here, Go Anywhere'," said Deborah Condon, the Director of the two-year college. We take pride in our program designed for students working on an associate degree to prepare for admission to a four-year college. But at the same time, our college meets the needs of a wide range of "non-traditional students." "We encourage prospective students to apply early so we can work with them on an individual basis to demonstrate how the college can help them meet their special academic, career and personal objectives," Condon said. In the category of "non-traditional," Condon includes students working full or part time, individuals for whom college was delayed, individuals who wish to advance in their jobs or who want to change careers, and many other types of students who are serious about their academic careers and increasing their personal options. "We also have our share of students of all ages including senior citizens who are here for the sheer pleasure of learning," Condon said. The college offers associate degrees in behavioral sciences, business administration, education, criminal justice, general studies, early childhood education and pre-nursing. A science lab, computer lab and e-library are part of the Union City facilities. Credits earned at other qualifying educational institutions transfer to GMC Community College. Condon says that the approximately 400 students at the Union City and Fort McPherson campuses come primarily from Atlanta's South Metro region, including South Fulton, Fayette, Coweta, Clayton and Henry Counties, with some commuting from DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties. Georgia Military College and its network of campuses are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. It maintains memberships in the Association of American Colleges and Universities, The Association of Private Colleges and Universities of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Two-Year Colleges, as well as other associations.
