Bad Links? | Rutherford wants to form public safety committeeBy JOHN MUNFORD Peachtree City Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford wants to form an advisory committee for public safety matters. Laying out the idea at Thursdays City Council meeting, Rutherford said she envisioned the committee getting into more detail than the council is able to go into on various issues. It will also encourage more citizen input with both the police department and fire department, she added. Rutherford said she only wants the committee to provide advice to council, not to make policy. She suggested council could use the input to form five-year plans for the fire and police departments. I think it would be good for both departments to have impartial advocates, Rutherford said. Councilman Steve Rapson and Mayor Steve Brown noted that both departments are accredited by separate agencies. To me, youre just adding another layer between us and the people were holding accountable, Rapson said. Councilman Murray Weed and Stuart Kourajian said they would be interested in hearing more details about a possible public safety committee. Brown said he would also, but he sounded hesitant due to the accreditation issue. |
