Bad Links? | Fayette DFACS requests school supplies for needy childrenFayette County Department of Family and Children Services has extended its deadline for accepting school supplies to benefit needy children. Residents can now drop off their donations to the DFACS office located at 905 Hwy. 85 South until Aug. 31, DFACS community resource specialist Sharon Herbert said. The original deadline posted was July 22. Herbert urges parents to pick up a few new items such as bookbags, pens, paper and other school supplies while enjoying their tax-free holiday from July 28-30 and bring it into the office. So far, the office plans to help 222 children and counting this year. All but 78 children do not have sponsors. The school supplies will be offered to foster care children and other children who demonstrate a need, she said. Local children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade will benefit from the donations. Herbert is confident that enough people will come forward to help, but those who are undecided Herbert asks to give. Theres definitely a need, Herbert said. People have big hearts here. Thats been my experience. Herbert said people should give because it not only helps the giver, but the donor, too. The children are so appreciative when they receive the supplies. Their eyes light up when they get the supplies and they send her dozens of thank you cards, she said. Its a person-to-person connection, she said. Its good for the person who sponsors and its good for the people who get the help because they feel like somebody cares about them. For more information, call Sharon Herbert at 770-460-2569. |
