Bad Links? | EMC fundraiser helps Costa Rica projectThe third annual Take Aim for Progress sporting clay event was held in Griffin recently with 36 EMC and vendor teams vying for the honor of having the number one team in the state. This annual shoot is being held each year to raise money to send volunteer lineman, supplies and equipment to rural areas of Costa Rica so that electricity can be brought to families who may otherwise never have it. This years event raised almost $20,000. The winning team was from Coweta-Fayette EMC, and Robert McDonald was one of the highest scoring shooters (tying for first place) with the best overall score out of 215 shooters who participated in the event. EMCs in Georgia want to help bring electricity to villages in Costa Rica that have never seen a light bulb or had a refrigerator for food and medicine. As a team, manufactures, distributors, agents, representatives and cooperatives are uniting to make electrifying these rural communities of Costa Rica a reality. Last year, for the first time, six linemen from Georgia EMCs made the trip to Costa Ricas Coopelesca to help build a line that connected 33 new families. Without this type of support, these families would not have electricity for many years. Also present for the event were Harry Gutierrez and Elias Espinoza from Coopequanacaste in Costa Rica, which the benefit will help. They journeyed to Georgia to be present for the shoot plus gain ideas and knowledge from fellow EMCs to better their own cooperative. While in Georgia they spent four days with Coweta-Fayette employees not only acquiring new knowledge but enjoying themselves shopping, site seeing and attending a Braves baseball game. Thanks to the Georgia EMCs and their vendors that support this event to make it a success, people in rural Costa Rica will know what its like to experience the lighting of their very first light bulb. |
