Peachtree City United Methodist breaks ground for new Scout lodgeLast month, a group of Scouts, local citizens, church staff and church members from the Peachtree City United Methodist Church moved the first shovels of dirt to begin the process of building a Scout lodge on the churchs property. It was just after PTCUMC had purchased land at the corner of Stagecoach and Robinson Road that the vision of a Scout lodge was developed. Church and Scout leaders saw great potential in the 63 acres to serve our communitys youth by creating a facility for scouting activities, a spokesperson said. Before the construction had even started on the new church now standing on Robinson Road, a small committee was formed to develop a concept for building a Scout lodge. As a chartering organization, PTCUMC sponsors one of the largest scouting programs in the Atlanta area. This sponsorship brings scouting to more than 400 boys and girls ages 7 -18 and includes Girl Scout Service Unit 617, Cub Scout Pack 75, Cub Scout Pack 175, Boy Scout Troop 75, Boy Scout Troop 175, and Boy Scout Troop 275. With such a large scouting commitment, the church leadership approved the development of a dedicated scouting facility. The Scout Lodge will be more than just a meeting place, the spokesperson said. The churchs dream is to build a special place that will provide a designated scout environment that blends a meeting and activity facility with the outdoor resources available on the church property. After completing the architectural design in late 2003, Scout leaders, supported by the church, started fund raising activities for the construction of the Scout lodge. Through enthusiastic support of church members and the local community, sufficient resources are now available to start building efforts. Scout leaders say they hope to complete clearing of the site and have the road and foundation in place so that volunteers scouts, church members, and friends can participate in the structure building phase planned for late summer. Our Scouts continue their fund raising activities with plans to team with the United Methodist Men and Peachtree City Kiwanis for the July 4 chicken barbecue, the spokesperson said. They already have a plan to operate a food booth at the Great American Air Show in October. For more information about the PTCUMC Scout lodge program contact Retired Col. Jeff Shafer, 404-569-7888.
