Bad Links? | Combs honored upon retirementBy CAROLYN CARY Carolyn Combs, supervisor of the Fayette County Elections and Voter Registration Office, will be retiring at the end of June with 21 years of service. A going-away reception was held this week with over 150 friends, family, and co-workers taking part. Combs is a native of Atlanta, a graduate of Fulton High School and Georgia Southern. She and husband James have lived in Fayette County for 30 years and reared two children here. They have two grandchildren. When Fayette County was created in 1821, there were nine voting precincts laid out, and probably fewer than 500 registered voters. When Combs began work with the county in 1984, there were 18 precincts and 18,000 registered voters. As she retires in 2005, there are 36 precincts and 63,000 registered voters. Reading, traveling, and working in her yard will be on her to-do list this summer. Once I have become used to being retired, she said, I plan to be of service to the county in some volunteer capacity. Among her treasured memories will be the many friends she has made on her job. Some of the best friends I have, came about through my job, she said. I have enjoyed meeting the poll workers, and some of them have been in that position longer than I have been in mine. I have seen changes in the manner of voting go from all manual, to electronic voting and Im glad to have been a part of all of it. Margaret Malone, a 19-year county employee, will be taking Combs place. |
