Bad Links? | English off Supreme Court listBy LEE WILLIAMS Griffin Judicial Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge Paschal English Jr. has been scrubbed from a final list of candidates chosen to be considered for the seat of a Georgia Supreme Court judge who retires in June. A total of 25 people have been nominated to fill the seat of Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman Fletcher, who retires on June 30. Five people withdrew their names. However, only 17 candidates, including 61-year-old English of Thomaston, made it to the second round of the selection process. Judicial Nominating Committee Chairman Mike Bowers in Atlanta held interviews Monday and Tuesday and narrowed the list of candidates to five. English was eliminated from the list. The committee forwarded the short list to Gov. Sonny Perdue, who will have the final pick. Among those chosen were: - Cynthia J. Becker of Decatur, a Dekalb County Superior Court judge. - James (Jimmy) Franklin of Franklin, an attorney and senior partner of Franklin, Taulbee, Rushing, Snipes and Marsh, P.C. - Harold D. Melton of Atlanta, executive counsel for the Office of the Governor. - Charles B. Mikell of Atlanta, a judge for the Georgia Court of Appeals.· - Ralph F. Simpson of Tifton, an attorney who owns his own practice. |
