Bad Links? | Flat Rock students win state science fairWill Kearney and Emma Kearney, eighth-graders at Flat Rock Middle School in Tyrone, won the Grand Award in the junior division at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Georgia last month. The Grand Award is the highest honor a project conducted by middle school students can receive. Their project was on physiological and psychological responses to color and color memory. Emma tested classmates psychological responses to 8 colors while her twin brother, Will, built a pulse monitor and a galvanic skin response meter and measured physical responses to colors. Then they measured how well students remembered words printed in the 8 colors and compared the results to the psychological and physiological data. They found that students remembered words that were printed in colors that they liked but that caused them some physical stress. The three colors most often remembered were orange, violet, and red. Blue and green were the least-remembered colors. Their teacher Mikie Emerson, the gifted science teacher at Flat Rock, received the outstanding junior division teacher award. Both Will and Emma were also nominated to participate in the Discovery Young Scientist Challenge. |
