Ken Durand, Matt Tyler, Matt Waymack and Barry Lancaster, better known as The Peachland Quartet are tuning up their vocal chords in preparation for a benefit concert at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. The one hour plus program of gospel music will help raise money for the churches transportation fund. The concert which starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. will be in the main sanctuary of FFUMC on Lanier Avenue this Saturday evening. Having sung in hundreds of churches since their inception 20 years ago, Peachland is a part-time professional southern gospel male quartet based in Atlanta, Ga. The quartet has four recordings out at present, and they have started work on the fifth. Tenor Barry Lancaster has sung tenor for Peachland since 1992. He is the sixth of seven children born and raised in Swifton, Arkansas, population 862(counting dogs and chickens). Lancaster has been singing since he was 13 and sang with a youth quartet called The New Home Singers. He won the southeastern regional male vocal championship for the Regency talent search, a preliminary tournament for Star Search. In 1984 he moved to Georgia and married his wife Debbie in April 1989 where they live with their three boys, Sam, Mitchell and Joshua. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, lead Ken Durand traveled extensively around the southeast during the 70s with his family as the Lordsmen Singers, a Southern Gospel group who released recordings on the Lefevre Sound label in Atlanta. From Gilbert and Sullivan stage shows to a touring group known as the Continental Brass, Durand spent his college years traveling and singing extensively. He was named the featured baritone soloist for the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra in 1987. Eventually Durand formed the Southern Gospel group Redeemed with his wife, and high school sweetheart, Debbie. They currently reside in Dacula with their two fur children, a Springer Spaniel named Tripper and a Nova Scotian Retriever named Tobi. Ken has also taken an avid interest in promoting southern gospel music in the Atlanta area, forming the Southside Gospel Sing in 1999. Baritone Matt Tyler has been singing with Peachland since 1993. He is a native Atlantan and attended Mt. Carmel Christian Church for over 25 years, leading various singing trios and ensembles. After graduating from Georgia State University, Matt met and married his wife, Zena. They now live in Flowery Branch with their son, Grayson. Matt Waymack, who sings bass for the group developed an interest in music in the sixth grade when he began playing trumpet in band. While continuing his trumpet playing in the Redcoat Band at UGA he developed an interest in singing. This lead him to audition and then sing bass for two groups at the BSU. Waymack, who has lived most of his life in the metro Atlanta area, has been with Peachland since 1999, He currently resides in Flowery Branch with his wife Rebekah and sons Matthew II, Barry and Holden. Matt completed his doctor's degree in January, 2003 in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia where he also received both his bachelor's and master's degrees. There will be open seating that evening, so it is recommend folks come early for the best seats in the house. Tickets can be purchased from the church office at 175 East Lanier Avenue in Fayetteville for $10 each. All sales will be in advance of the event, with only 550 tickets sold.
