Bad Links? | Residents speak their minds By JOHN THOMPSON More than 70 residents turned out Tuesday night to give Senoias leaders suggestions on improving the downtown area. The meeting, held at the Freeman Sasser building in the citys park, was sponsored by the citys Downtown Development Authority. Representatives from the Department of Community Affairs asked the residents what they like about down and what they would like to see added to the city. Some of the responses included friendly people, historic aspect, pedestrian friendly and the library. One of the more humorous responses was, Christmas decorations, when theyre working. The residents were also quite clear about what the city needed to add to the quality of life and draw tourists to the area. The biggest need was restaurants. While the city does have a coffee shop downtown that serves sandwiches, more than 20 people said the city needs a nice sit-down type of eatery. Other needs for the town included more upscale shopping, a welcome center and softening the streetscape. Youve got a great bit of history here. We dont want to change that; we want you to help grow it, said Paul Kreager, economic developer at the University of Georgia. Kreager was impressed with the more than 100 historic homes in the city and said many cities would love to have the historical flavor of Senoia. Residents also suggested that any infill in the downtown area match the historic flavor of the city and the downtown area be expanded to the east and west side streets. Kreager ended the meeting by asking residents to sign up for one of four committees: design, promotions, economic development and organization. The cities that fail to meet their goals dont do it because of a lack of funds. They do it because they lose their passion, he said.
