Bad Links? | McIntosh soccer teams still alive in state title huntBy MICHAEL BOYLAN If all goes according to plan, the McIntosh boys and girls soccer teams will each host a state championship game this weekend and possibly win titles in front of the home crowd. To get there though each team faces formidable foes in the semifinal round. The McIntosh boys have won their three state playoff games by a combined score of 9-1 with their last win being a 4-1 victory over third ranked Salem. Nader Jarun had two goals in the win and Kevin Goelz and Derek Farnsworth each had one. The Chiefs now have a record of 20-2-1 and will take on St. Pius X on the road tonight at 6 p.m. St. Pius X, ranked fifth in AAAA, is 14-3-4. Their last loss was on Mar. 1 to South Forsyth and their last tie was a scoreless one to Woodward Academy on Apr. 15. Since then they have gone 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 11-1. Their last win was a 1-0 victory over sixth ranked Greenbrier, Evans. The winner of tonights game will meet the winner of Evans and Woodward Academy in the final. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs took on second ranked Marist last night after the paper went to press. The Lady Chiefs are undefeated this season (22-0-1) and havent given up a goal since Apr. 12 (2-1 win over Shiloh). In the AAAA playoffs thus far McIntosh has outscored their opponents 26-0. Marist (14-3-4) lost to McIntosh 2-1 on Mar. 24 and will undoubtedly be seeking revenge in this game. They have won nine games in a row and have posted seven shutouts in that span. In the playoffs this year they have out scored their opponents 28-1. The winner of this game will take on the winner of Hardaway and St. Pius X in the final. In Class AAAAA soccer action last week, Starrs Mills boys and girls lost in the quarterfinals. The girls lost to Parkview 5-2 on Friday, while the boys lost to Brookwood 3-2 on Saturday. In the girls game, Starrs Mill took a 1-0 lead but found themselves down 3-1 early in the second half. Kelley OHara scored both goals for the Lady Panthers. Keegan Hanie and Kyle Nowicki scored for the boys but the team could not hold the lead against the Broncos. The Starrs Mill boys finished the season with a record of 12-4-5, while the girls finished the season with a record of 16-1-2. |
