Bad Links? | Local student recognized for essayWill Kearney, 13, an eighth-grader at Flat Rock Middle School in Tyrone, won honorable mention in the 4th annual Characters Cool! essay sontest sponsored by MindOh Foundation. Kearneys essay was the only winning entry from Georgia students. More than 5,550 students participated in the contest from 250 schools in 40 states. His essay was selected as one of the top 25 submitted from middle school students. Kearney wrote an essay called Striking Back about the case of Darryl Gray, a Georgia student who was bullied repeatedly over two years and then finally struck back, only to receive a 90-day probation and fine while the bully received no punishment. MindOh sponsors Project Wisdom, the character education program used at Flat Rock Middle School. The contest is an annual program developed by the MindOh Foundation to further character education and empower youth to practice ethical behavior. This year's contest theme was bullying, and how youth can address this cruel phenomenon by looking at the problem through the eyes of the bully, the victim and the bystander. |
