Bad Links? | Foundation awards $29,000 to teachersThanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals who supported the Fayette County Education Foundation this year, $29,000 in minigrants will be given to Fayettes schools for the 2005-2006 academic year. The money will go to the countys elementary, middle and high schools to assist them in the development of unique learning programs to complement the curriculum that is already in place. Since the spring of 2002, the foundation has funded nearly 200 teacher minigrants totaling over $80,000. These minigrants have helped creative teachers implement innovative classroom projects and programs that otherwise would not have received funding due to budget constraints. The foundation is a cooperative effort of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the school system. This year the foundation received a record number of 264 grant applications totaling more than $110,000. Due to the foundations limited amount of funds compared to requests received, grants are awarded through a competitive process based on a detailed explanation of the proposed program written by the requesting teacher. Special emphasis is given to programs that enhance reading and technology although all academic areas of study are considered and do receive awards. Educators whose grant requests are selected are required to submit a written report at the end of the program describing how it enhanced classroom learning. These reports are given to the foundations donors so that they can see how their gift is being utilized within the school system. Teachers from 19 elementary, middle and high schools are the recipients of the Fayette County Education Foundation 2005 minigrant awards. The following is a list of schools along with the total amount awarded: Braelinn Elementary, $500. Brooks Elementary, $2,869.52. Robert J. Burch Elementary, $3,565.65. Cleveland Elementary, $2,382.446. East Fayette Elementary, $234.95. Fayetteville Intermediate, $401.50. Flat Rock Middle, $1,214.88. Hood Avenue Primary, $2,850.91. Huddleston Elementary, $1,900. McIntosh High, $398.77. North Fayette Elementary, $1,846.19. Oak Grove Elementary, $1,710.66. Peachtree City Elementary, $1,311.92. Rising Starr Middle, $998.05. Sandy Creek High, $500. Spring Hill Elementary, $264.95. Starrs Mill High, $2,696.89. Tyrone Elementary, $500. Whitewater Middle, $2,260.91. The foundation accepts donations throughout the year. The foundation is incorporated as a non-profit 501 C 3 Georgia Corporation so donations are tax deductible. Since the foundation has very few overhead costs, approximately 90 percent of every dollar donated directly goes toward funding teacher minigrants and scholarships for employees who are working toward earning a degree in education. Minigrants and scholarships are awarded each spring. A board of directors comprised of business leaders, community members, teachers, school board members and school system administrators oversee the operation of the foundation. Anyone who would like more information on the foundation can contact the Fayette County Board of Education, 770-460-3535, ext. 122. |
