Bad Links? | PTC animal cases will go to State CourtBy JOHN MUNFORD Citations written by Fayette Countys Animal Control officers will no longer be handled in Peachtree City Municipal Court. At the request of county officials, the offenses will now be handled in Fayette County State Court instead. This will allow animal control officers to avoid having to report to different courts on various days to dispose of cases, said city spokesperson Betsy Tyler. The change was officially approved at Thursdays meeting of the City Council. Any animal-related cases handled by the citys police department will still go to municipal court, Tyler added. Fayette County has long provided animal control services to Peachtree City and other municipalities. Although the county has a leash law for pets, Peachtree City allows owners to use voice control only if appropriate. In other business, council approved a change order to the renovation and expansion of the library that will cost no more than $155,506. The change was necessary because of problems noted with masonry walls that werent built to code when the last expansion was done in 1994 and 1995, officials said. The best way to fix the problem will be to tear the walls out and rebuild from scratch, noted City Manager Bernie McMullen. It was also pointed out that the contractor who did that work is no longer in business likely making it difficult to recover any damages, said City Attorney Ted Meeker. He also noted that the statute of limitations has run out on most of the possible charges that could be filed against the business. This latest change will likely add 30 days to the expected completion date of the library, which could still be finished by late September, McMullen said. No more drastic change orders are expected since the library has been stripped down as far as necessary; one change order was to re-work the drainage pipes from the roof, which was another problem that went unknown until crews went to work on the refurbishment end of the project, officials said. |
