Bad Links? | Starrs Mill sinks teeth into region titles, 4-AAAA up in the airBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starrs Mill varsity soccer teams are both region 4-AAAAA champions. It is the sixth in a row for the boys team and the first in 4-AAAAA for the Lady Panthers. Both teams went undefeated in the region, 6-0, and both were extremely dominant. The Lady Panthers outscored their region opponents 53-4. They posted four shutouts in the six games and concluded the regular season on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Union Grove. Kelley OHara, Gina Goforth and Laura McCalla scored the goals, while Adrienne Phillips, OHara and Katie Jacobsen got the assists. It was the eight shutout of the season for Starrs Mills goalkeeper Katelynn Morgan. The team finished the regular season ranked first in AAAAA with a 14-0-2 record. They will begin the state tournament at home next Wednesday against the fourth seed from region 2-AAAAA. The Panthers ended their regular season on Tuesday with a 9-0 win over Union Grove. Nick Bugara had three goals and an assist, while Wes Kent added two goals and an assist. Keegan Hanie added a goal and an assist, and other scorers were Chris Capati, Chris Pecca and Riley Phelps. Kyle Nowicki added two assists in the win and Chris Griffith added one as well. The Panthers had five shutouts in their six region games, outscoring their opponents 43-2. They finished the regular season ranked ninth in AAAAA with a record of 10-3-5. They will start state tournament play next Thursday with a game against the fourth seed from region 2-AAAAA. McIntoshs girls began their region tournament play on Wednesday night with a 15-0 drubbing of Lithia Springs. Jesse Lenze had four goals and an assist, while Kari Quinn had a hat trick and Monica Hogan, Olivia Tucker and Kellie Myles each added two goals. Other scorers for the Lady Chiefs were Kaelyn Horton and Katie Mosby. The Lady Chiefs were due to face Woodward Academy yesterday afternoon after the paper went to press and, if they won, will take on Whitewaters Lady Wildcats for the region championship tonight. Whitewaters girls defeated Northgate 4-0 to put them in the region title game. The Whitewater boys lost to Woodward Academy 4-0. They will be on the road next week when the state tournament begins. McIntoshs boys defeated Sandy Creek 5-2 on Wednesday, setting up a game between the Chiefs and the Woodward Academy War Eagles for the region title. |
