Bad Links? | City continues sewer upgradeBy BEN NELMS Palmetto council members voted March 4 to accept the lone bid for renovation of the Snowfall Pump Station. The project, totaling nearly $213,000, is part of the citys overall sewer system upgrade. City residents were also reminded of an upcoming hydrant flush by Palmetto firefighters. Mayor Clark Boddie told council members the city had received only one bid for the renovation project. The bid, submitted by Newnan-based Ronny D. Jones Enterprises, Inc., was forwarded to city consulting engineers Keck & Wood. In an April 4 letter, Keck & Wood representative Dennis Benz recommended the city accept the bid based on bid specifications and his confirmation that the bidder is known to have successfully completed similar type projects and is considered qualified to perform the work. The current bid is a part of the citys overall sewer project, funded by a $9 million bond issue that will increase the sewer capacity to one million gallons per day. The current capacity is 600,000 gallons per day. The overall project is expected to be completed in spring 2006. The sewer system upgrade stems from a consent order by Georgia Environmental Protection Division requiring Palmetto to complete the necessary infrastructure for pumping wastewater to the countys system. Also at the meeting, residents were reminded that firefighters will be inspecting and flushing the citys fire hydrants from April 11-23. Though sometimes considered an inconvenience, the action is needed to ensure proper functioning of hydrants during fire-related emergencies. Boddie advised that residents check for discoloration and flush faucets until the water is clear. Residents were also advised to check the water prior to washing any clothing. |
