Bad Links? | No one injured in police car crashBy LEE WILLIAMS A Fayetteville police officer escaped injury when his patrol car collided with an overturned vehicle on Ga. Highway 314 on a soggy Friday morning. Officer Hugo Rex was responding to the scene after an accident involving an overturned vehicle with injuries was reported about 5:52 a.m. Rexs car collided with a blue 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass owned by Rodrick Lashaun Landrum, of Championship Court, Fayetteville. On the way to the accident, I did not see that the vehicle overturned in the middle of the road and I struck the vehicle, Rex said in his report. Rex walked away unscathed, however his police cruiser sustained damage as a result of the collision, police said. Rexs vehicle was the second automobile to collide with the sedan after it overturned Monday. According to police, Landrum, 21, was traveling south on Hwy. 314 in the left lane. Landrum told police that he started to turn left just before Biltmore Drive because he thought it was his turn. Landrum realized it was not his turn and attempted to keep going south on Hwy. 314. Due to the rainy conditions, Landrums vehicle started to slide on the wet road and he lost control of his Oldsmobile. The rear of his car hit the median on Hwy. 314 and flipped at least two times before coming to rest, police said. An injured Landrum exited the vehicle. He was transported by ambulance to Piedmont Fayette Hospital for treatment. As the vehicle laid partially in the left southbound lane on Hwy. 314, it was struck by an oncoming beige 1998 Chevrolet Astro van driven by Donhi Jamaal Gray, 21, of Byington Drive, Fayetteville. Gray told police he saw the Oldsmobile while traveling south on Hwy. 314 at the last second because of the rainy and dark conditions. He attempted to avoid it, but was unsuccessful. Units of the Fayette County Sheriffs Department, the Fayetteville Police Department, Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Fayetteville Fire Department responded to the accident. Fayetteville police is investigating the civilian crash. Fayette County Sheriffs Department Traffic Enforcement Division is investigating the crash involving the police officer. Landrum was cited for failure to maintain lane. No other citations, injuries or collisions were reported. |
