Bad Links? | Fayetteville path in the worksBy BEN NELMS The plan to establish a 10-foot-wide, multi-use paved path along Beauregard Boulevard and Redwine Road is winding its way through the process that could eventually become a path system linking downtown Fayetteville with Peachtree City. In the planning stages for the past few years, the project is currently in the right-of-way phase, with needed parcels being secured, said Fayette County Public Works Director Lee Hearn. Once secured, the road to completing the project includes obtaining a application from Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT), a process likely to take 90-120 days, he said. Once the DOT contract is obtained, a subcontractor can be hired to do the work. In all, the time frame involved to begin installing the path may take as much as six months, said Hearn. The 10 foot-wide paved path will begin along Beauregard Boulevard near the intersection of Grady Avenue and continue south on Redwine Road past Kiwanis Park to Horseshoe Circle. The width of the path should provide room for a variety of multi-use purposes for residents, Hearn explained. At 10 feet wide, I can envision people rollerblading, riding bicycles and moms pushing strollers, he said. I think it will be a nice thing. Once completed, the first phase of the project will help planners assess the desirablilty of extending the path based on the usage volume and the types of usage it receives. Phase I is a litmus test that will help us work toward future projects, Hearn said. Succeeding phases would continue the multi-use paved path south on Redwine Road and eventually linking it with the Peachtree City path system. The current phase of the multi-use path is a joint project of Fayette County and the City of Fayetteville. Hearn said the project cost, totaling approximately $450,000, is funded by $240,000 in federal dollars with the remainder of the funding coming from the city and county. |
