Bad Links? | Wild car chase ends in two arrestsBy BEN NELMS Two juveniles face charges after a stealing a car Tuesday in Atlanta, injuring a motorist in Fairburn and being caught on foot by Palmetto police. The two males, ages 13 and 15, were charged with theft by receiving and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle while the 15 year-old was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, according to Fairburn Detective Sgt. Toney Williams. After reportedly stealing a new gold Acura from an Atlanta residence, the juveniles drove to Fairburn where they bumped into the rear of a vehicle stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Ga. Highway 138 and U.S. Highway 29, according to Williams. The driver exited his vehicle to determine if any damage had been done. Simultaneously, the 15 year-old driving the Acura backed up and began pulling around the vehicle. The driver jumped onto the hood of the Acura, believing he was about to be struck by the car, Williams said. With the man holding onto the hood, the juvenile made a U-turn in the intersection, slinging the man off onto the ground, he added. After the incident in Fairburn, the juveniles headed south on Hwy. 29, where they were clocked by Georgia State Patrol Trooper Lee Boone in excess of 80 miles per hour, Williams said. The trooper turned around and pursued the Acura that was entering the city of Palmetto. Boone had radioed Palmetto police to make them aware of the situation, said Palmetto detective John Cooper. While this was occurring, the juvenile made a sharp, right turn at the intersection of Hwy. 29 and Ga. Highway 154, overshooting the street and sliding down the embankment, coming to rest in a ditch and nearly hitting a telephone pole, said Cooper. The juveniles exited the vehicle and fled on foot, he added. Cooper, assistant chief Fred Waddell and officer Richard Cheek joined in the pursuit of the fleeing juveniles. The young males cut across yards on Griffith Drive and Turner Avenue with officers closing in behind them. The foot race that ensued was one that the younger and more agile juveniles could not win. Officers cornered and apprehended them within minutes. Officer Cheek suffered a knee injury during the pursuit and will require surgery, Cooper said. Back in Fairburn, the driver flung off the hood of the Acura refused paramedics offer to transport him for possible medical treatment, according to Williams. His vehicle receive minor damage. |
