Bad Links? | Fayettes Natl. Merit Finalists announcedEleven Fayette high school seniors have been named as finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The finalists are (Fayette County) John M. Jackson, Deidre L. Humphrey, Travis R. Giebler and Sung J. Park; (McIntosh) Will Halicks, Madeline McAllister, Daniel Lacis and Steven Perry; (Starrs Mill) Katie Houghtaling, Erin Patterson and Megan Roseen. All finalists will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. In addition, corporations, business organizations and colleges and universities will also underwrite over 5,000 scholarships for students meeting specific criteria of the sponsoring institution. Before becoming a finalist, students must be selected as a semifinalist based on their scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) they took in their junior year. Finalists are then selected on the basis of their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies as well as their SAT scores. Merit Scholarship winners of 2005 will be announced April-June. These scholarship recipients will join more than 226,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
