Air Force Maj. Gen. Mark Volcheff, director of operations for the Air Mobility Command, presented the awards at a ceremony Friday in Peachtree City, location of Worlds international headquarters. Aerial Achievement Medals were awarded to 83 pilots, flight attendants and an operations representative who flew at least seven missions during the conflicts. Certificates were presented to 279 additional employees for their service. The Aerial Achievement medal is the same award given to Air Force crews, based on the same criteria. This was the second occasion for AMC awards to World Airways employees. The first was for their role in Desert Storm and Desert Shield in 1991. Both periods represented the only times the U.S. Civil Reserve Air Fleet program has been activated, utilizing carriers that volunteer aircraft and crews in support of military action. World has a 50-year history of supporting the U.S. military, and they are more than a customer to us, said Randy Martinez, Worlds president and chief executive officer. We flew a total of 550 missions during Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, carrying 21 percent of all military passengers moved during that time. I am extremely proud of the outstanding service provided by our dedicated World employees. Gen. Volcheff praised the efforts of World Airways and its people. Youre a highly respected company, with a patriotic, can-do attitude, he said. Youve done a wonderful job. World Airways, a wholly owned subsidiary of World Air Holdings, Inc.
