Bad Links? | Sandy Springs draws interest from South Fulton mayorsBy LINDSAY BIANCHI Sandy Springs was on the minds of South Fultons leaders last week. The South Fulton Municipal Association held their monthly meeting February last week at the Palmetto Senior Citizens Center and discussed a variety of issues. The Association consists of council members and the mayors of six cities located in the south metro area of Fulton County: Fairburn, Palmetto, Union City, Hapeville, East Point and College Park. After a steak dinner was served to a fairly large turnout of about 50, Palmetto Mayor J. Clark Boddie of Palmetto addressed the crowd, introducing representatives from each city. A special guest speaker had been scheduled but was not available. Mayor Boddie moved gave the floor to Mayor Alan Hallman of Hapeville. The mayor spoke firmly in opposition to the incorporation of Sandy Springs. Concerns of lost revenue for their cities gave many members pause. If they want to get in my pocket, I think I would fight. Hallman said. There was mention of support for Sandy Springs desire to become incorporated if it were revenue neutral. Union City Mayor Ralph Moore said, If Sandy Springs is incorporated, either the city or the county is going to lose. Moore said he was hearing a lot of speculation from the group, but that it was better to talk facts. He suggested going over the data to see what effect it would have on their cities before making any real decisions. If a substantial loss would be discovered in the Associations research, they agreed to send a letter to the legislative branch of the state making their concerns known. Im not against Sandy Springs. Im against them getting in my pocket, Hallman said. The city of East Point will host the next meeting on March 17 to discuss questions of homeownership for first time buyers, seniors, foreclosures and predatory lending. |
