2 from Fayette take top state prep titles

Swimmers and wrestlers from Fayette County got to measure themselves against athletes from across the state this past weekend at the biggest competitions of the winter sports season. Though a number of our local student athletes performed well, only two have earned the title of state champion.

Lauren Cartwright, a member of the Starr’s Mill swim team, took first place in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:04.35. The Lady Panthers, who recently won the county championship, placed 11th overall at the Class AAAAA state swim meet. Cartwright also earned solid finishes in the 500 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Fayette County’s Drake McCoy extended his winning streak to 105 matches as he won his second consecutive AAAAA state championship in the 275-pound weight class. McCoy went 53-0 this season on his way to capturing the state title.
