Tyrones Town Council will discuss a double dose of Americana during its Feb. 17 council meeting.
First up for discussion is a Waffle House, to be located across Ga. Highway 74 from the Publix shopping center.
Late last year, officials of the Norcross-based waffle giant took the griddle and went home after not being able to agree with towns leaders on design standards for the restaurant.
But late last week, Town Manager Barry Amos received a call from the hashbrowns king.
They asked to be put back on the agenda for further discussion, Amos said.
After agreeing to modify their restaurant to look more inviting, Waffle House officials had a problem with the citys sign ordinance.
Waffle House wanted a monument sign featuring 40 feet of signage on Hwy. 74, which proved to be the sticking point.
That type of sign is only allowed near their entrance, which would not be on Hwy. 74, Amos said.
Last week, Sonic Drive-In got a green light from the towns planning commission to open a store in Tyrone, near the proposed Waffle House.
According to the restaurants Web site, there are more than 2,900 locations around the country and is worth more than $1.5 billion.
But getting the go-ahead from the Planning Commission was not easy, as several restrictions were put on the design of the eatery. Its going to be built of brick and stucco, and the stucco will match the Publix shopping center, Amos said.
The restaurant will not feature the trademark neon, but instead the canopy will be lit underneath to give it a warmer tone, Amos added.
Sonic also eliminated some of the parking spaces, or service slots, and will also beef up the landscaping, Amos said.
Both issues will be discussed during the 7 p.m. Feb. 17 meeting.
