Firm recommends custom mouthguards for athletes

Fans of high school athletics have seen a rise in the wearing of mouthguards to prevent oral injuries. Traditional mouthguards, known as boil and bite mouthguards, have been the norm but athletes have complained that they do not always fit accurately and can make breathing and speaking uncomfortable. According to Sports Dentistry Online, properly fabricated custom made mouthguards can reduce the rate of concussion as well as dental and mandibular injuries. A custom made mouthguard features precise adaptation, doesn’t deform considerably over time and can be made thicker in certain areas that may require more protection. The cost for rehabilitation for dental injuries can approach several thousand dollars per tooth. Dr. Ray Padilla, an active member of the Academy for Sports Dentistry, states that the rehabilitation cost for single knocked out tooth are more than 20 times the preventative cost for a custom laminated, professional grade mouthguard.

There are five different levels of PLAYSAFE mouthguards each offering a different level of protection and several that are unique to certain sports.
