The Fayette County Health Department officially ran out of its supply of flu vaccine yesterday.
This happened days after state public health officials decided to lift the restrictions on who could get the vaccine due to the nationwide shortage caused when one manufacturer had to halt all production of the vaccine.
At this point, Fayette County doesnt have any more flu vaccine and we are not anticipating getting any further shipments, said Peggy Berry, nursing supervisor at the Fayette County Health Department.
The restrictions adopted by state officials were designed to ensure that persons at highest risk to contract a potentially deadly flu side-effect, pneumonia, were vaccinated. Persons with compromised immune systems and those in personal care homes were among the first batch of those allowed to get the vaccine.
Patients who werent vaccinated are urged to wash their hands often and avoid touching their face to prevent contracting the flu virus.
