County embarks on land use studyBy JOHN THOMPSON Do you think Coweta County is headed in the right direction or do you think the planning for growth has been a disaster? No matter what your opinion, youll be able to let the countys leaders hear you loud and clear over the next few months. County Administrator Theron Gay said the county is in the first stages of setting 10 public meetings to help the county update its Comprehensive Land Use Plan. The current plan was approved in 1995 with updates scheduled every 10 years. The current update includes not only an in-depth look at suggested land use patterns, but also transportation guidelines. Working with all government entities, county planners will create development guidelines to be approved in 2006. A key element in this planning process will be public input. Gay said the first meeting will be Feb. 8, but a site has not been identified yet. In addition to offering their opinions, residents will also be asked to participate in a community survey. Theres going to be a lot of opportunity for community feedback, and we hope we get a lot, Gay added. Besides deterring the best land use for the next decade, Gay said the county is also undergoing an ambitious traffic study. URS Corporation of Atlanta has been selected to facilitate the transportation aspects of the update as part of the development of a joint comprehensive transportation plan involving Coweta County and the municipalities of Grantville, Haralson, Moreland, Newnan, Senoia, Sharpsburg, and Turin. A special Web page has been created on the county's official Web site where the most current information on the update process can be found. Anyone wanting to keep up with the process can access the information through a link at www.coweta.ga.us. |
